Just reading up again about this dude Robert F. Williams. I remember reading a book about him and the Radio Free Dixie radio station that he ran out of Havana, Cuba back in the day. I was reminded of him after getting an e-mail about an independent film chronicling his life called Negroes with Guns. (h/t to Michael)
Dude was no joke; he was not down with Brother Martin and the rest of the civil rights establishment talking about peace. He was calling for Negroes to arm themselves back then. Anyway, how would the NRA feel about Negroes like Robert F. Williams having 2nd Amendment rights to bear arms? I suspect that when it comes to these Negroes arming themselves the folks from the gun lobby would sing a different tune. Of course a lot of Negroes do have guns; it's just that the owners of these guns have no business owning them. These are illegal guns, and the Negroes who own them are killing each other and not taking up arms to protect themselves against social injustice and oppression. They use them to protect their turf, settle petty differences, and enforce rules of street conduct that only they can understand.
I doubt if any of these young bucks wilding out in the streets have ever heard of Robert F. Williams. In fact, I know that they haven't. If you ask them who Robert F. Williams is they would probably tell you that he plays power forward for the Knicks. If Robert F. Williams knew how much guns that Negroes now had but are using them on each other he would be turning in his grave. This is not what men like him fought for when they were literally fighting for their lives.
Now it's folks in the majority population who are calling for more guns, and ironically, it's all because of a fear of those Negroes I talked about with their guns. (The times they were a changin.)
Williams passed away in 1996, and it's hard to imagine that he was once a leader in the NAACP. No disrespect to Ben Jealous and the NAACP, but I suspect that if armed white folks were coming into the hood and killing black folks they would be calling on congress to pass stiffer gun laws and not for Negroes to be arming themselves.
Anyway, we do have armed thugs killing black folks, but sadly, it's other black folks doing the killing. I think Robert F. Williams would have talked about that uncomfortable truth. Sadly, the NAACP will not.
