Getting Seizures From The Hussy's Weed

Wisconsin scuzzy trashbuckets The Hussy threw their sophomore baby Weed Seizure to the wolves back in March. We talked about their debut Cement Tomb Mind Control last year, which was a solid garage rock album in its own right, but Weed Seizure is much more cohesive. Don't for a minute think they have cleaned up their sound - The Hussy are still as scattershot and dissonant as always. Yet on tracks like 'Liar', 'Bad Speed' or 'Stab Me' (which reminds me a bit of Brisbane's own Cannon), regardless of whether the main impetus is distortion, warped bubblegum pop or thrashy angst, it all hangs together, sounding truly purposeful. The lo-fi recordings are always going to grind people's gears, irrespective of the genre, but the one thing I often find on the latest (massive) batch of garage releases is that they don't have enough "good" tracks to sustain an album. The Hussy have left filler by the wayside, offering Weed Seizure like four ground up cyanide pills masquerading as a line of coke/rolled spliff/stein of beer - a killer record nigh on impossible to resist...

Weed Seizure is out now through Tic Tac Totally.

Friday Cover Up #1 - The Horrortones Souled Out.

Leave it up to rock'n'soul cover behemoths The Horrortones to put out something as irregular yet delectable as a triple 7" box set. These guys only play like twice a goddamned year! Seriously though, it's great to have these consummate pleasure machines put tracks on wax, and the six songs on display will have you greasing your hair back and shimmying in no time! Just try to resist the decadent, blitzed charms of 'W.A.S.T.E.D' or the swinging frenzy of 'Mojo Hannah'. None of the band members even know where 'They Don't Know' comes from, but the tune does James Brown and hootenannies proud (trust me, such extremes can co-exist). And it wouldn't be The Horrortones without a Dirtbombs cover - or at least a cover of the Dirtbombs covering The O'Jays ('Living For The Weekend').

Courtesy of Mere Noise, there are only 150 of these suckers on planet Earth, so pre-order this diamante delicacy here. The launch is on Friday June 1 at The Beetle Bar, where they will be joined by Gentle Ben & His Sensitive Side, Cannon and Lovely Legs (who have just finished recording tracks for an upcoming cassette - I've heard the unmixed tracks and they are special!) And look at that poster! The caricatures are more life-like than the band members in person!

Blacken Those Princely Lips

Two great shows on tonight kids. Firstly there is the Bonnie Prince Billy show at GoMA for the Matisse Up Late program. Expect some exceptional music coupled with heaps of dicks talking and "being seen". Its a pity that there will be that kind of crowd, but what can you do?

Bonnie Prince Billy - I See A Darkness

Go see Black Lips, that's what you can do! The garage behemoths are bringing their incendiary show to The Zoo, with great support from Tiny Migrants and Cannon (go the Long Gone collective!) This will be the raucous drunkfest that you always dreamed of. And to tie the two shows together in a tenuous fashion...
