Dodging Daggers Mid Flight

Just a quick post about Leap of Fangorn, the new release from Melbourne experimental shoegaze sludge dwellers Daggers Mid Flight. It's an interesting cocktail that leaves one hell of a dank, trippy aftertaste - a heavy mess of percussion, bass and guitar drudgery that links arms with Wolf Eyes and Grey Daturas, brothers in dirge. Similar in spirit with Brisbane's Die On Planes (although a little more 'experimental' in some of the structures), Daggers Mid Flight occupy the silence as much as they do the noise, happy to hunker down and let the music coalesce into a dirty, brain-frying mess before it all melts away into nothingness. An album of brutal sonic exploration, it will hurt your head, but you have to be cruel to be kind - well worth the effort.

Leap of Fangorn is out now through Bro Fidelity and Chairfish Recordings.

Horsing Around In Palo Verde's Zero Hour

These guys are pretty damned ace. I was approached a little while back by Phratry Records (Swear Jar, Mala In Se) about this sludge-metal improv duo called Palo Verde that they thought I would dig. Well, as happened at the end of last year, things got a little hectic, and they fell through the cracks. I've been listening to their Zero Hour record - and it fucking slays, especially opening track 'Dark Meadow For Long Night'. Seriously if you liked my Die On Planes post the other week, or love your music to fall somewhere between Rangda and Shellac but without those troublesome lyrics, then you will love this. Loud, deliberately abrasive, bordering on offensive, ballsy, and definitely rock. The best part? That it is also catchy - the band don't stray from dynamism, so in the end it inexplicably remains about the sum of its parts - this is soooooo tight. These girls (yes, the ladies can flay your eardrums too...) are amazing. If you get to see em, I envy you - seriously.

Dying On Planes Is The Deep Future

Controversial headline, no? No. Brisbane noise improv outfit Die On Planes have put an album together called The Deep Future, a compendium of recorded works from 2006-2012. Its pretty fucking rad. The funny thing is, you will never hear these guys play em. They are improv, dummy! But it gives a great representation of what these guys do. I wish they played more shows, rather than build guitars, play in other bands and live in Goondiwindi.

The Deep Future can be got here. Also, hassle them to play a Sonic Masala show every chance you get. I need more dumb, sloppy psych/doom meanderings in my life.

Also, it's a whiles away, but the boys are playing a great show supporting Melbourne's True Radical Miracle July 1, apparently at the Step Inn. Others include Per Purpose, Stag and Cured Pink. Head over here for deets.
