There was a little boy

named Jared Lee Loughner. He was born 22 years ago.

When he was a baby he needed to be fed, washed, soothed; he needed his diaper changed. He was weighed and measured, shots were received, he was praised, scolded, taught to sing, color, share, take a nap.

Jared Lee Loughner started life as a baby, just like each and every person who has lived or ever will live on the planet.

People undoubtedly said, "What a cute baby!"

By first grade he could tie his shoes and dress himself.

By third grade he probably knew how to get his parents' attention, his teachers' attention, his friends attention, in whatever way he could.

By his senior year in high school he, like any other American kid, had watched over 100,000 murders on TV.

He had seen hundreds of thousands of beer commercials.

He had seen half a million scenes of happy beautiful people having fun, in the know, accepting each other.

How many murders had he committed virtually in video games?

How many times did he use drugs to medicate his pain?

How many times did he feel the close connectedness of friendship and being part of the group? Now everyone in media wants to see the last picture he took of himself, holding his gun, wearing a red thong.

How many times has the media celebrated women in red thongs,

their power in their nakedness,

their clout between the legs in symbols of sexuality?

How many times

does every little girl see

naked women getting all the good attention?

How many times

do little boys see the one

with the biggest

gun having all the fun,

winning in the end?

What you want is to see Jared Loughner in a red thong, Right Voyeur?

The Media need to SHUT UP

about who created Jared Loughner

because it is they who almost surely have the biggest piece of that Blame Pie.

A big pie with a lot of pieces.

I am so sad for his life, his family, his pain.

My heart aches, I am so sad for his victims and

 the spiral of huge pain that is now but beginning.

In washington dc, as a counselor, i lived with 45 people who suffered from schizophenia. Wonderful people who taught me a lot. (hi David) They had come from various places: the street, halfway houses, St. Elizabeth's hospital.

The life of someone who is paranoid is a HORRIBLE suffering.

Jared Lee Loughner Sins; Everyone Pick Up a Rock

The nation is casting a lot of stones because of and toward Jared Loughner. Outrage, hyperbole, rash charges and hysteria have been both reported and exhibited by the media. Loughner has been called monster, sicko, mentally ill, evil, soulless, poorly raised, neglected, let down, demonically possessed.

The last few days of reading headlines could be summarized, perhaps, with this one:

I'm pondering exactly why this one hit home. Anger Abides.
 There are three major theories or categories of blame for Loughner.
One: Psychological Disorder
 If Jared Lee Loughner is suffering from a mental illness, should we be treating him rather than screaming at him?
That is, some who have seen his face say he is "crazy."
Those assessing his legal defense will say he was "insane" (a legal term).
Psychologists who would plumb his mind will find he is suffering from a mental disorder;
some trying to see his soul say he is "possessed."
 In this case-- a homo sapiens creature with an illness-- shouldn't our national conversation be about our mental health system? How might we be better neighbors, good Samaritans to those in need? Getting angry at a sick person seems weird.

Two: Moral Failing; Evil, Mortal Sin
If Jared Loughner is guilty of a moral offense against humanity and Divinity,
why are we astonished and gnashing our teeth? President Obama (in his speech at the Memorial in Tucson) reminded us that there is evil in the world and that we will never be able to eradicate it. If you react to this with the true horror of Jared Loughner's sin, why are you not in a frenzy over the sins of others every day?
There are thousands of murders* every year  to pick from, some involving torture and grotesque sexual violence--some too sad to hear...
 perhaps too gruesome even for Hollywood--
So,
 with a Virginia Tech every four days** --are you walking around angry at everybody's sins?

[BTW, Does the media pick and choose a story and tell us how to emote every 48 hours?]
What purpose, Anger, at the sins of certain folks? GET ANGRY and  Throw some stones! ?
unless- are you angry at those who have given the example of how to commit violent sins? 
are you angry at systems or environmental elements that are teaching, cleverly, our children how to commit sin with Impunity? But whaddaya gonna do about it? *

A third category-
-if one does not believe
such faithy stuff:
sin, goodness as divine, life everlasting,
 absolute good or evil; eternal truths, the preservation of you and your personality for eternity (really?)
but rather choose a
soulless but
 Mathematically Elegant Evolution of DNA survival--
one might choose
to Stone someone
at least
 to eliminate bad genes in the pool. (should be required, Actually, along with all actions that Get Rid of the Horrible Things. Quit putting energy and resources into those who are taking more than they give to the collective. Doy. Sentimental much?)

 This third way
may allow for anger-- toward Loughner,
as he has not played by the rules. He might not have "chosen" to be mentally disturbed, but he "should" have gotten help- instead he acted out violence for some reason; this needs to Stop. or be stopped.
anger toward others:
rationally, logically find out the reasons, search the environment, find why our pseudo quasi utopia is being marred by this guy or his parents or those who influenced him. Get angry at whoever or whatever is behind all this [temporary] pain.
This third way, where Molecules are king---
soon we are all dead (molecules dispersed) and nothing remains, no pain, no memory.

Really, this moment, we're just gelatinous masses of noisy eaters bouncing around the planet, ingesting, uniting, yeilding, laughing, building, hitting, killing. Get over it. Values are relative. Hitler was simply making provisions for his dna. Don't be mad at him, or Jared, they are just blipping into existence for a minute; then they are gone.  Happy eternity.

These are the types of documents every university keeps in order to record troubles with students in case they later need to do the last thing they really want to; expel someone. I know that those who work with these kids hope for their success and are saddened when they will not get help.
Some of the most affected folks with schizophrenia that i worked with in D.C. did NOT want help. They preferred to be homeless, or, "free" and did NOT want to be medicated.
Remember:
Let there  be no judgement where there is no compassion.

What would you do if a person acted "crazy" around you? Do privacy rights supersede "preemptive community safety" rights? that is, when are we to--when would YOU-- step in and act--even against another's will--when behavior seems too far outside the norm or frightening?
How seriously would You push the authorities to act?

On the one hand,
 Thomas Szasz felt folks should live and let live---and that there was really no such thing as Mental Illness : [from Wiki--"Mental illness" is an expression, a metaphor that describes an offending, disturbing, shocking, or vexing conduct, action, or pattern of behavior, such as schizophrenia, as an "illness" or "disease". Szasz wrote: "If you talk to God, you are praying; If God talks to you, you have schizophrenia. If the dead talk to you, you are a spiritualist; If you talk to the dead, you are a schizophrenic."[8] While people behave and think in ways that are very disturbing, and that may resemble a disease process (pain, deterioration, response to various interventions), this does not mean they actually have a disease. To Szasz, disease can only mean something people "have," while behavior is what people "do"... Psychiatry actively obscures the difference between (mis)behavior and disease, in its quest to help or harm parties to conflicts. By calling certain people "diseased", psychiatry attempts to deny them responsibility as moral agents, in order to better control them."]

The news cycle conversation regarding
The murderous behavior of Jared Lee Loughner has moved
to a discussion of mental illness.
 (Having mightily embarrassed themselves, journalists are pretending they were not just involved in the most self-serving, illogical focus on a news story of the new millennium. By the way, are pornographers who push it on us 24-7 responsible for all the sexual assault? Are violent rap songs responsible for girl-friend beating? just asking...)

Consider the development of unstable or troubling behavior in those around us.
Ask yourself, truthfully,
would you do anything, step outside your comfort zone to practically FORCE a person to get psychological help?
We assume "someone else" will do something--but the nature, particularly of thought problems or schizotypal disorders, often means
 there is no "someone else."


The friend of Jared Lee Loughner, who spoke to Mother Jones's Nick Baumann, gives us some information about the timeline of psychological (if not biological) troubles for JLL.

"Tierney, who first met Loughner in middle school, recalls that Loughner started to act strange around his junior or senior year of high school. Before that, Loughner was just a "normal kid," says Tierney. When the two friends started hanging out in sophomore year of high school, "there was nothing really dark about Jared," Tierney says. "He was playing drums, doing band things, playing sax. He was raised on writing and reading music." Loughner also did a lot of creative writing in his high school days, Tierney says, and he used to carry around a copy of a short story he wrote involving a character named Angel; he'd ask people if they would like to read it. "It had a lot of hidden metaphors in it," Tierney says.
As Loughner and Tierney grew closer, Tierney got used to spending the first ten minutes or so of every day together arguing with Loughner's "nihilist" view of the world. Does angry speech or violence in metaphor provoke violence in real life? Some thoughts:
On the Dailykos, a writer who claims he had worked hard and spent his money to elect Congrsswoman Giffords was angry about her stances on issues.
Three days before the shootings, he wrote why he despised her and
typed, "She is Dead to Me, she is dead to me she is dead to me."
Is that phrase now to be banned? (it was removed from the daily kos site)
-Sarah Palin put the congresswoman's district in the (guns) "crosshairs" on her webpage--should she take blame? (has since removed from web).
Are we hatefully promoting violence with phrases and symbols? Do we ban them?

should be provoking a national discussion about how to assist those exhibiting mental instability or violence who do not seem to want help.

"While Americans are grappling to understand the Arizona tragedy, the absolute vacuum of leadership on both sides is staggering.

We live in a country that has been struck by John Hinckley Jr. and Sirhan Sirhan, Lee Harvey Oswald and Mark David Chapman. And one that’s been hit by terrorists like Timothy McVeigh, the DC Sniper John Allen Muhammad, the Fort Hood killer Nidal Hasan, and 19 highjackers all claiming to be freedom fighters. You’d think we’d understand the difference between madmen and terrorists.
All evidence points to the fact that the assailant from this weekend was severely mentally disturbed. His belief system was not rational by any modern political standard.
He was an atheist, believed George W. Bush was responsible for 9/11, feared a global currency, cited the Communist Manifesto as one of his favorite books and thought the Mars rover landing was staged. These are not the opinions of a coherent individual.
Far too often, we have seen in our schools and in our post offices, acts of violence from misfits of society. While we can look for the warning signs, these horrific events will always be with every nation.
Though violence is a human problem,
every American citizen can make a personal choice today.
 Do you believe that Americans, from any walk of life, can convince themselves they are freedom fighters and carry out acts of violence? My answer is yes. If you agree then you must take a clear stand.
Turning these horrific events into an opportunity for a political attack is a very childish response to a very grown-up problem. This is not about winning a political blame game. Atheists are not to blame. Those who hate George W. Bush are not to blame. Those who don’t believe in space travel are not to blame. Jared Lee Loughner is to blame. Period.
This tragedy should not be used as an opportunity to try and bend reality to retroactively place a madman on the other side of the aisle. It should be a time to pray for the victims and their families, a time that we can all come together and state that violence is off limits for all sides in a Republic. It’s a time for us to state with a unified passion that we won’t accept anyone who threatens or actually carries out violence.
Denouncing violence from all sides including your own does not make your movement any less just. To quote Martin Luther King:

"But there is something that I must say to my people, who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice: In the process of gaining our rightful place, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again, we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. "
I challenge all Americans,
 left or right, regardless if you’re a politician, pundit, painter, priest, parishioner, poet or porn star to agree with all of the following.
•I denounce violence, regardless of ideological motivation.

•I denounce anyone, from the Left, the Right or middle, who believes physical violence is the answer to whatever they feel is wrong with our country.

•I denounce those who wish to tear down our system and rebuild it in their own image, whatever that image may be.

•I denounce those from the Left, the Right or middle, who call for riots and violence as an opportunity to bring down and reconstruct our system.

•I denounce violent threats and calls for the destruction of our system – regardless of their underlying ideology – whether they come from the Hutaree Militia or Frances Fox Piven.

•I hold those responsible for the violence, responsible for the violence. I denounce those who attempt to blame political opponents for the acts of madmen.
•I denounce those from the Left, the Right or middle that sees violence as a viable alternative to our long established system of change made within the constraints of our constitutional Republic.
I will stand with anyone willing to sign that pledge. Today I make a personal choice. I urge leaders of both sides and all walks of life to join me as all Americans joined hands on 9.12.2001.
I believe that we must change ourselves to hold on to our republic. That’s why I have been talking about e4. Enlightenment. Education. Empowerment. Entrepreneurship. It’s a personal solution for all of us to become the people we were born to be, not the people we’ve allowed ourselves to become. I have called for a personal revolution; change ourselves in order to change the world. Those who live with honor and are responsible to themselves and their families will be the key to the future of our Republic, not those playing political games.
While everyone seems to be focused on politics, I instead choose to focus on Christina Green, the nine year old victim killed Saturday. Born on 9.11.2001, she is now a victim of another case of horrific violence. I hope we can all remember Christina by acting the way we did when she was one day old: To focus on values and principles, to use common sense and stop playing politics."

Saturday: An apparently mentally ill man targeted Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords
 but killed several other people.
The 22-year old Loughner sprayed bullets at close range during a neighborhood's meet and greet with Congresswoman Giffords.
Below, his words and the signs of mental illness.

First, a recap of the tragedy.

A woman and two men in the crowd jumped Jared Lee Loughner during his reloading, holding his magazine and gun away from him, yelling at him. (He complained that they were hurting his arm.) People making 911 calls were doing triage on victims while speaking with the 911 operator.
Witnesses stated that he seemed pleased with the killing he had wrought. One said he seemed "cold"--almost a "smirk".


 Officials state that he is NOT cooperating with police.

(His history is one of "odd" or "scary" or unbalanced" behavior. Students complained of his mental instability. College police were called to classrooms due to his disruptions 5 times. Jared Loughner lists as his favorite books at his Youtube site: "I had favorite books: Animal Farm, Brave New World, The Wizard Of OZ, Aesop Fables, The Odyssey, Alice Adventures Into Wonderland, Fahrenheit 451, Peter Pan, To Kill A Mockingbird, We The Living, Phantom Toll Booth, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Pulp,Through The Looking Glass, The Communist Manifesto, Siddhartha, The Old Man And The Sea, Gulliver's Travels, Mein Kampf, The Republic, and Meno."  This issue to be examined below.)

• It should be made perfectly clear that people with mental illnesses in general do not commit more crimes than folks who are not afflicted. Remember, there are mothers who kill their children who think they are saving them from satan, and are in a twisted way fighting to be heroic; and there are those who kill their children with no remorse or out of greed, selfishness and  bad intent.

•  Many will focus on the politics of this event- it has already happened, almost immediately, like when certain politicians publicly assumed the times square bomber was a "tea party"  person for some reason or that the Oklahoma bombing was the result of arab terrorists...the post HERE raises the question about how a variety of people immediately ramped UP the rhetoric of political anger, while ironically or hypocritically calling for toning down political anger...
• The people who were killed seem to be extraordinary folks. Always seems to be the case. We are surrounded by really good people in our day to day lives, as the stories come out.  The judge (U.S. District Judge John Roll) who was killed was saying hello to Giffords after attending Mass.
• One older man fell on his wife, shielding her body from the bullets. He died protecting her.
• The young girl who was killed was top-notch. Interested in politics, ballet, and baseball. She was the only girl on her little league team (wanted to be the first female major leaguer), was born on 9-11, was just elected to office in her class (see video below), had just completed her first communion. Everyday events, parts of good happy family life we all relate to.
• A 20 year-old intern for the congresswoman, Daniel Hernandez, only on the job for a few days, is credited with saving her life. I beleive he was trained in some medical area, like nursing or triage.

• The congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was by all reports extraordinary, very well-liked by all and a gift to many. She was an interesting mix in her politics: a former republican, she was a democrat representing a republican district. pro-gun rights, pro-border protection, Freedom for motorcycle riders, intensely interested in health care.
• Her tagline quote was from Mother Teresa:  "We can do no great things, only small things with great love." She was shot from behind the left ear; the bullet went through her brain and exited the skull through the frontal lobe. Her speech may well be affected. But it is extraordinary that she is alive. Her surgeon describes how HERE.

In this post (and HERE and HERE) i would like to examine the data, the facts, the evidence, and the clues as they come out as they relate to the mental health of the gunman.
This guy, Jared Lee Loughner, has a number of posts and videos on youtube which i will share with you below, along with some comments regarding any hypotheses about his mental state which might shed light on this horribly consequential act of violence.

Tierney adds, "I saw his dream journal once. That's the golden piece of evidence. You want to know what goes on in Jared Loughner's mind, there's a dream journal that will tell you everything...
• excerpt 2: "Tierney, who's also 22, recalls Loughner complaining about a Giffords event he attended during that period. He's unsure whether it was the same one mentioned in the charges—Loughner "might have gone to some other rallies," he says—but Tierney notes it was a significant moment for Loughner: "He told me that she opened up the floor for questions and he asked a question. The question was, 'What is government if words have no meaning?'"
  "He said, 'Can you believe it, they wouldn't answer my question.' Ever since that, he thought she was fake, he had something against her."Giffords' answer, whatever it was, didn't satisfy Loughner. "He said, 'Can you believe it, they wouldn't answer my question,' and I told him, 'Dude, no one's going to answer that,'" Tierney recalls. "Ever since that, he thought she was fake, he had something against her."
  Tierney says he has "no clue" why Loughner might have "shot all those other people." But, he notes, "when I heard Gabrielle Giffords has been shot, I was like 'Oh my God...' For some reason I felt like I knew...I felt like if anyone was going to shoot her, it would be Jared."
  Loughner would occasionally mention Giffords, according to Tierney: "It wasn't a day-in, day-out thing, but maybe once in a while, if Giffords did something that was ridiculous or passed some stupid law or did something stupid, he related that to people. But the thing I remember most is just that question. I don't remember him stalking her or anything." Tierney notes that Loughner did not display any specific political or ideological bent: "It wasn't like he was in a certain party or went to rallies...It's not like he'd go on political rants." — By Nick Baumann
•  PBS interviewed a neighbor who was in the house of Loughner's parents today. He reported that Jared Lee Loughner's mother was "broken down" in bed, --may have to be "hospitalized"--and that the father was unable to speak more than three words without crying.

Monday morning, TV news shows report that Jared Loughner recited his poetry in class in a scary way, loudly ranting, holding his crotch, and hopping around the room. His instructor said it scared the women.
I wonder if Rappers are going to be focused on....

At the moment, the pieces of information indicate the presence of a thought disorder. I will post later in the week as more information emerges. This is a good time to look up how difficult it is to help those afflicted with thought disorders; i worked in D.C. with folks who endured paranoid schizophrenia and they did not always want assistance.
