NÉNETTE (2010, Nicolas Philibert, A++++++++++)

Talking about the gaze of monkeys reminds me of a film I just saw: NÉNETTE (2010, Nicolas Philibert, A++++++++++). There are a few scenes in this film which let us watch the face and the eyes of the female orangutan for a few minutes, while the orangutan is doing nothing except staring at the camera. After watching the eyes of the orangutan for a few minutes, I felt like crying, and I don't know why. The gaze of the orangutan in this film is extremely powerful, and its tremendous power is unexplainable for me.

I also like it very much that this documentary talks about the three husbands of Nénette and the fact that the zookeepers try to prevent Nénette from having sex with her own son.

I also wonder why there have been many films about monkeys made lately, including:

1.NÉNETTE

2.PROJECT NIM (2011, James Marsh), but I haven't seen it yet.

3.RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2011, Rupert Wyatt, A++++++++++)

4.ZOOKEEPER (2011, Frank Coraci, B)

AND NOW THE PRESIDENT WILL TALK ABOUT THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT (2011, Sitthichai Pleantongdee, 17:49 min, documentary, A+++++++++++++++)

Thai films seen on Thursday, July 28, 2011

1.AND NOW THE PRESIDENT WILL TALK ABOUT THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT (2011, Sitthichai Pleantongdee, 17:49 min, documentary, A+++++++++++++++)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gb5yGGo4kqU

What I like very much in this film is its sincerity. The film depicts a group of university students who went on a project to improve a rural village. The film doesn't try to make this project look more important than what it really is. The most impressive scene in the film is the one in which the university students try to find some papaya for cooking. The film depicts "life", not "messages" nor "lessons".

2.THERE WILL BE DRAMA (2011, Janenarong Sirimaha, 9:43 min, A+++++++++++++++)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YChMR5WXNNE

After making READ ME! (2008, 17 min, A+++++++++++++++), Janenarong comes back this year and proves that he is still one of the best melodrama filmmakers. What I like very much in his films is that they are not ordinary melodramas. The dialogue and the actions of the characters in THERE WILL BE DRAMA are extremely illogical, thus extremely funny, and remind me of some absurd or surreal films. For example, when Woman A gives a drink to Woman B, Woman B doesn't drink it, but pours the water over her own hand, and says, "I'm sorry, but I drink water via my pores." When Woman A and Woman B quarrels, suddenly Woman A performs a Thai classical dance without any reasons. This kind of dialogue and actions can only come from a really creative mind.

What is great in Janenarong's films include great ideas, great scripts, great editing, great performances, and great casting. I hope he will keep on making films like this.

However, the reason why this film is my second most favorite film of the day, instead of my most favorite, is because Sitthichai's film makes me feel "free" to feel anything about it. THERE WILL BE DRAMA makes me laugh and thrills me a lot, but I know that my laughs and my excitement comes from the clever calculation of the director.

3.A MOMENT IN A RAIN FOREST (2010, Eakalak Maleetipawan, 14 min, A++++++++++)
This film is one of the best films inspired by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. The film gets closer to Apichatpong's filmic universe than other films I have ever seen. However, I have seen it only once, and I think it is not the kind of film that is easy to comprehend in only one viewing.

4.FATE (2011, Chawagarn Amsomkid, 11:30 min, A+)
After making MY HUSBAND (UNCENSORED) (2008, A+++++++++++++++), which I think is one of my most favorite cult films of all time, Chawagarn comes back this year with an essay film. A scene in this film is extremely funny--the one in which the camera depicts a couple in silence for a long time, before the woman says to the man, "We should break up," and the man complains in voiceover that the scene makes him wait for too long for this moment.

I can't remember other things in this film now, but I remember that the thoughts or ideas presented in this film are not extremely interesting for me. So while I may like the form of this film, because I like essay films in general, I feel that the content of this film is only moderately interesting.

5.A STORY IN A CAR (2011, Wachara Kanha, 4 min, documentary, A+)
The film captured the moment when Wachara quarreled with his mother because he thought that his mother spent too much money for his little brother in an inappropriate way. This is the drama of "real life". This is a part of human beings. And it is hard to judge who does wrongly or rightly in this film. Is Wachara justified in blaming his mother? Does he envy his little brother too much?

6.WE WILL BE ON TV (2011, Pimpet Pimthong + Nipaporn Kunsing, 9 min, documentary, A+/A)

7.MY MISTAKE (2010, Pitchaya Nivitanont, 2:21 min, animation, A)

8.ROOMMATE (2011, Theerapat Wongpaisarnkit, 10:07 min, A/A-)

9.PSYCHOSIS (2010, Anuphap Autta, 20:08 min, A-)

THE STORY ABOUT YOU AND ME (Alwa Ritsila)

10.THEATRES (2011, Wachara Kanha + Teeranit Siangsanoh, 80 min, B+)
My most favorite scene in this film is the one in which the camera secretly records the reflection of a beautiful woman on a glass wall of a fast food restaurant. The scene is a little bit long, and it gives me excitement because I didn't know if the woman would know about it or not. So I waited to see if she would get angry and scold the filmmakers. I like this scene very much, because it reminds me of myself. For example, when I see a handsome guy in a sky train, I will secretly look at his reflection on the opposite glass wall from time to time.

However, this film is the worst film made by the Underground Office in my opinion. The film deals with the various aspect of "cinema" in the lives of the filmmakers, but the film lacks the poetic touch. Many parts of the film are a little bit boring, and these parts are joined together crudely, not poetically.

11.THE HOPE (2010, Saranya Premjai, 15 min, C+)

SOME THAI SHORT FILMS

DOCUMENTARIES
4.FIXED GEAR (อรพัฒน์ พัฒนพงศา, A+/A)

FICTIONS
5.HAPPY BAD DAY (รุ่งโรจน์ เพ็งพันธุ์ฉ่ำ, B-)

THE STORY ABOUT YOU AND ME (Alwa Ritsila)
http://vimeo.com/14085858
http://vimeo.com/13837222

Child Soldiers in Sudan: The WAR CHILD Emmmanuel Jal

A documentary exploring the Sudanese civil war which erupted in 1983-- through the eyes of a hip-hop star who was forced to fight as a child. This 2008 film begins with some history: The Arab-dominated government of the north fought against the Christian and Animist rebels of the south. Two Million died; four Million were displaced. During the two decades of the war, over 10,000 child soldiers were used. Here is a site about Jal's movement for peace: iamboigenius we-want-peace

[ How to force children to kill:
A  most horrifying depiction,
 which deepened my understanding of the psychological aspects
 of this unbearable crime --occurred
when i watched the Movie,
Blood Diamonds. I am still traumatized whenever i think of it. ]

War Child  shows how "his powerful songs reveal his very complex feelings about one of the world's overlooked tragedies"   -- The former first lady of southern Sudan, Garang, said of Emmanuel, "There are people fighting who are using the guns; there are people fighting who are using the songs...

HERE is a 52 minute docu on youtube.

HERE is a Wiki page on Emmanuel Jal.

And HERE IS a history of the Sudanese lost boys:
  • "Experts say they are the most badly war-traumatized children ever examined..."

  •

As i watch this documentary, it is a constant back and forth of hope/forgivness and overwhelming psychological pain/bitterness.

Jal describes how things began-the arab government came and destroyed everything;
Burnt the fields.
killed the cattle, kill the families.
Mass murders.

His village saw food aid falling from the sky--
he remembers "we would run for it and find big bags which said, 'USA' and in my heart i said one day i would go to America..."

 (Regarding America, he was so impressed with how we can criticize the President..."the way people make fun of george bush, he doesn't mind...if you do that in africa, you are asking to die...")
"My prayer is for the day when our leaders are more willing to serve their people, than to be served..."

He spoke of the great hunger they endured,
 that even other people started to smell like food so he prayed to Jesus to bring food.

He does not pull punches as he describes the various battles, exterior and interior, which he and his young friends encountered and endured.
 The power in a gun.
 The rapes of little girls. Not one-time events. The desperation to eat.
 They remain grateful to God "for being lifted up" out of misery.

"I have so many scars... the internal injuries..."--the source of his music today.
"I've been a refugee all my life..."  haunted by a terrible memory re: father issues...

His prayer was: "God, if there is anything You can do,
do not let my grandmother die before i can become a Blessing to her..." His return to her in Sudan--hearing her speak, she seemed like every women, like my grandmother...

What do you remember from 1980-2000 regarding Sudan? What did you do, or your church, or your neighborhood, or your government? (What did the U.N. do?)

"...Reinhardt speaks about Sudan by James Nachtwey throughout the writing. He seems to end at a negative place from my reading, (though I think I misunderstood since the photo made the cut in the show). In the photograph, a famine-emaciated man accepts hydration salts from a disembodied hand with reaches into the frame from a place close to the photographer. This works to equate the act of viewing the photograph with the act of offering assistance. Reinhardt suggests that this creates a “confused humanitarianism, in which the ‘intention is to acknowledge the outcast as a human being,’ while the ‘effect is to treat the human being as an outcast ‘”[32].

More about Sudan:
In Fall 2009
 K-State brought Simon Deng to campus, who told his story: HERE
excerpt ..." A former child slave and human rights activist from Sudan spoke to hundreds of students at the K-State Student Union Tuesday night. Simon Deng, who has spoken before the United Nations, was the first guest in this year's Lou Douglas Lecture Series. Deng's speech focused on his experience as a slave, the countless injustices and murders committed by the Sudanese government against its people and the need for people to act as the voice for victims of genocide and human rights violations who have no voice of their own.
Deng became a slave at the age of nine when he was abducted by an Arab neighbor and taken to northern Sudan where he was given to an Arab family as "a gift." Deng's traumatic enslavement lasted three and a half years. Despite being a child, he was forced to work continually and was frequently required to do things no child should: He only could eat table scraps left after the family had eaten, was beaten regularly and was forced to sleep in a barn with the family's animals.
"I was constantly kept under terror, being tortured even though I'd done nothing wrong," Deng said. "That is what it means when I talk about I'm being robbed of my dignity as a human being. I'm turned into a piece of property."

 i think at the time, Sam Brownback and Al sharpton were the only 2 suits pushing for darfur in wsh dc.
i was looking for simon deng stuff and found this peice of a letter i'd written:
"... to use a Simon Deng analogy, where is the World's Lifeguard?
that is, the one who will spring to action
 in emergencies, without all the committees' delays and debating sanctions etc while people die?--that was to be the united nations - now corrupt and dysfunctional. thousands of voices need to be lifted for change and action. Kansans have a politician, sam brownback, who has worked hard in this area. he should be deluged with requests to hammer on this. especially since
he is leaving the senate anyway
--push Sam push!!...
i obviously
 never finished that draft... the
waxing and waning of energy, urgency, and sloth ...
that's why you need a really fine dayplanner.

WHORES' GLORY (2011, Michael Glawogger, Austria) is partly about prostitution in Thailand. This film will be shown in the Venice Film Festival. I think WORKINGMAN'S DEATH (2005, Michael Glawogger) is a good documentary.

I REMEMBER (2011, Authawut Boonyuang, 90 min, A++++++++++)

WALK TO PHUKET (2010, Tanaporn Sae-low, 29 min, A++++++++++)

EMPIRE OF MIND (2009, Nontawat Numbenchapol, 90 min, documentary, A+), ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY (Tani Thitiprawat, 30 min, documentary, A++++++++++) และอาจจะรวมไปถึง HOME COMPUTER (Teeranit Siangsanoh, 19 min, A++++++++++) หนังกลุ่มนี้ผสม "ชีวิตส่วนตัวของผู้กำกับ" กับ "ประเด็นการเมือง" เข้าด้วยกัน แต่ด้วยสัดส่วนและวิธีการที่แตกต่างกันไป และเราอยากให้มีนักวิจารณ์นำหนังกลุ่มนี้มาวิเคราะห์อย่างละเอียดมากๆ ว่าแต่ละเรื่องมีส่วนเหมือนกันและมีส่วนแตกต่างกันอย่างไรบ้าง

ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY เป็นหนังที่เหมาะนำมาฉายประชันกับ I REMEMBER มากๆ เพราะมันเป็นหนังที่พูดถึงชีวิตส่วนตัวกับประเด็นการเมืองในสัดส่วนที่เกือบเท่ากัน ถ้าเราจำไม่ผิด ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY จะพูดถึงการเมือง 33%, พูดถึงชีวิตครอบครัวของผู้กำกับ 33% และมีส่วนที่เป็นหนังทดลอง 33% ซึ่งใน I REMEMBER นั้น ก็มีทั้งประเด็นการเมือง, ชีวิตส่วนตัว, หนังทดลองเหมือนๆกัน แต่ I REMEMBER จะ treat ประเด็นการเมืองในแง่ที่เป็น "ความทรงจำที่ค่อนข้างกระจัดกระจาย" ในขณะที่ประเด็นการเมืองใน ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY

I DID NOT DREAM LAST NIGHT (2008, Taiki Sakpisit, 10 min, A+) UNLESS HE TELLS A LIE, UNLESS HE TELLS A LIE (2010, Taiki Sakpisit, A+) ที่เป็นการถ่ายภาพผู้หญิงบนรถไฟฟ้า และ UNDERGROUND FILM (Teeranit Siangsanoh, 47.3 min, A+) ที่มีฉากถ่ายภาพผู้หญิงบนรถไฟฟ้าเหมือนกัน

16.SPIRIT DE NOIR (Pichet Smerchua, 7, A+)
SPIRIT DE NOIR (พิเชษ เสมอเชื้อ)

http://www.miamiartmuseum.org/exhibitions-past-muller.asp

17.TALKING HEADS (Teeranit Siangsanoh, 28:25, documentary, A+)

6PM

Thai films seen on Friday, July 1

1.6PM (Sinjai Piraisangjun + Palakorn Jiamtiranat, 20 min, documentary, A++++++++++)
The broadcasting of Thai national anthem at 6PM every day is the topic which has been dealt with by at least 10 Thai short films during the past 15 years. However, I think 6PM represents one step forward in how to deal with this topic. This film not only observes the Thai people who pay respect to the national anthem, but also “disturbs” the myth in their minds.

2.95110 POSTAL DREAM (Taweewit Kijtanasoonthorn, 83 min, documentary, A+++++)
I like how the film deals with the young male drug addicts. I also like the story of the uneducated mother in this film very much.

3.69 (Somkid Pookpongs, 20 min, A+++++)
This film is visually gorgeous. I’m also glad to see Sawanee Utoomma in this film.

4.NINE LAST DAYS (Pongsakorn Ruedeekulrangsee, 7min, A+)
This film is very lovely.

5.THREE KINGS (2011, Taiki Sakpisit, 6min, A+)

6.6 TO 6 (2010, Aditya Assarat, 20 min, A+)

7.TWO YEARS OLD (Pimnipa Jittateeraroj, 28min, C+)
If this film wants us to hate its hero, it’s very successful at that.

FAVORITE QUOTE FROM PATRICIO GUZMÁN

Favorite quote from Patricio Guzmán, a great documentary filmmaker:
"What I like the most is to be able to film the silences. When a person is unable to continue speaking, has nothing more to say, instead of cutting there, I continue to observe the person. I think I interview more with my eyes than with my words."

(From Film Comment, March/April 2011)

The quote above reminds me of the silent scenes in such documentary films as

1.MODERN LIFE (2008, Raymond Depardon)

2.The Cinématon films of Gérard Courant

JEAN-LUC GODARD – CINÉMATON # 106 (1981)

PHILIPPE GARREL – CINÉMATION # 193 (1982)

SANDRINE BONNAIRE – CINÉMATON # 238 (1982)

THE MYSTERY OF THE SIBERIAN MUMMY (2004, Ute Gebhardt, Russia, A+)

Maybe this documentary should be screened after STORM OVER ASIA (1928, Vsevolod Pudovkin, Soviet Union). If I remember it correctly, STORM OVER ASIA does not portray the Buddhist institutions in Mongolia positively. STORM OVER ASIA is a powerful film, and it is right to attack bad things in religious institutions. But somehow I feel the film is a little bit too biased.

There are many interesting things in THE MYSTERY OF THE SIBERIAN MUMMY. One thing that I like very much is that the film talks about many Buddhists in Siberia who were massacred during the Stalin era. This massacre of the Buddhists somehow makes me think about the ideology presented in STORM OVER ASIA. I don't think that Vsevolod Pudovkin supported this massacre. But somehow an ideology in his film might be used in a wrong way or was used by an evil person, and led to bad things.

Watching these two films reminds me that both religions and communism are not good or bad things in themselves. What's important is how to use them or the persons who use them.

If a person doesn't try to "force" other people to believe in what he/she believes, or if a religious person doesn't try to "force" other people to be religious, or if a communist doesn't try to "force" other people to be communists, maybe the tragedy in THE MYSTERY OF THE SIBERIAN MUMMY wouldn't have occurred.
