Actually, Mitt has an even greater reason to know fear: There's a revolt in the ranks. The Free Republic has decided to oppose Romney in the general.

To hell with the GOP-e. Barring a miracle, they got their big government, unconstitutional mandate loving, socialist abortionist Obama-lite RINO on the ballot, they can now get him elected.

Don't you love it when right-wingers try to write while their mouths foam? They soon reach a point where they stop making any sense whatsoever. If Jim Robinson had continued much further, he probably would have started to punch the keyboard: "mn dfm ewfnoinef!!! EWPRPIOK, ADSFYU!!! OFAWIUO!! paoi NRFEPQWOE[ WPEQOF 89Q4JFFMQ!!!"

There are a lot of foamy-mouthed keyboard-clobberers out there in WingnutLand who don't want to support Mitt in the general. Abortion and gays are their big issues.

Evangelical activist Michael Farris was not exactly surprised that Rick Santorum suspended his campaign on Tuesday. But that doesn't mean that Farris, a longtime political organizer, knows what he's supposed to do now.

"Right now my choice is to sit on my hands and do nothing or to actively try to find some alternative" to Mitt Romney, Farris told CNN.com Religion Editor Dan Gilgoff, soon after Santorum's announcement.

Arguably, we are now seeing the birth of a right-wing analog to the PUMA movement. Many observers on both the right and the left presume that the hard core holdouts will acclimate themselves to the nominee. I am not so sure.

Think back to 2008. That year should have been a mortal lock for the Dems, yet women and disaffected Clinton voters seeped away from Obama in sufficient numbers as to make McCain the frontrunner as late as September. Then the Wall Street crisis hit, and everything changed. Today, a lot of people forget that Hillary won the popular vote in those rigged primaries, and everyone forgets that Obama was losing an impossible-to-lose election.

An unhappy base is a genuine problem. To entice the surly sit-at-homers, Mitt will have to pick Huckabee or Ryan -- or, egads, Santorum -- even though New Mexico's Susana Martinez would have more appeal to swing voters.

Mitt has one massive advantage: His supporters are smart enough not to insult anti-Mitt conservatives. The Romneyites know that you can't disparage those you hope to woo. In 2008, the Kossacks and other progressives spat upon Clintonites continually and needlessly, well after the convention -- and then those ninnies couldn't understand why the spat-upon parties refused to love Obama.
