I remember back in the day when I was a youngster trying to work my way into the A-merry-can political scene. I wasn't so much of an ideologue back then. My mind was pretty much still open to new ideas and ways of doing things politically.
So when a friend of mine, who happens to be one of those rare black republicans, (Shout out to GG!) asked me if I wanted to go to their convention in New Orleans, I hesitated at first but still went for it.
Folks, I am here to tell you that there is a reason why the republican tent is so small. Trust me when I tell you that they kind of like it that way. I will give you that this was the late eighties, but still, if looks could kill I wouldn't be here today. I don't care how much progress wingnuts claim they have made, you will never catch my black ass at such an event again. Ever!
Anyway I gave you that little vignette because I want to talk about Richard Grenell for a minute. Mr. Grenell is one of these guys who believes that he can fit into that republican tent even though he is openly Gay. Sadly for Richard, he is under the illusion that just because he thinks like they do the [right] wingnuts will accept him. They will not. I saw that up close and personal as a black man walking around the Louisiana Superdome in 1988.
"Richard Grenell, whom Mitt Romney chose last month as his presidential campaign’s national security and foreign policy spokesman, stepped down from his post Tuesday, suggesting that the conservative backlash over his sexuality prevented him from being effective in his role.
In a statement provided to The Washington Post, Grenell, who is openly gay, said: “While I welcomed the challenge to confront President Obama’s foreign policy failures and weak leadership on the world stage, my ability to speak clearly and forcefully on the issues has been greatly diminished by the hyper-partisan discussion of personal issues that sometimes comes from a presidential campaign.” He added: “I want to thank Governor Romney for his belief in me and my abilities and his clear message to me that being openly gay was a non-issue for him and his team.” [Source]
Richard, don't blame the fact that you are getting the business for being Gay from your wingnut friends on the "presidential campaign". You might want to take a look at the people who are attacking you, personally. They are not liberals or democrats; they are your ideological soul-mates who are right there under the tent with you, and they want you out.
Remember that old joke that us black folks like to tell about a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders? Well you belong with us chickens.

IT GETS BETTER (2012, Tanwarin Sukkhapisit, A++++++++++)
What I like the most in this film may be its intricate plot, though I feel some parts of the film seem too rushed, especially the scene in which a divorce decision is made. There are so many decisions made in five minutes in that scene that I think it would have taken a week for me to make so many important decisions like that.
Apart from that point, I like nearly everything in this film. I also like it very much that there's no real redemption for the homophobic father in this film. Many films in this world try to teach us that we should not neglect our own parents. However, every parent is different, and some parents really deserve to be punished, neglected, or kept at a distance. IT GETS BETTER is one of very few films that I love because it presents a father who may deserve to be neglected or kept at a distance. (That is the same reason why CRY IN SILENCE (2006, J. G. Biggs) is one of my most favorite films of all time.)
If I have to screen IT GETS BETTER with another film, I may choose to screen it together with INCENDIES (2010, Denis Villeneuve, Canada, A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++), because both films deal with unpredictable family relationships and have excellently intricate scripts.

I LOVE SYNDROME (2011, Ninart Boonpothong, A+)
Things I like very much in this stage play include:
1.The Stockholm Syndrome story, which is about a man who kidnaps a famous male singer in order to get revenge on the elder brother of the singer, but the captor and the captive fall in love with each other. It's like a gay version of Pisarn Akaraseranee's films, because there's some sadomasochistic pleasure involved in the love between them.
This story is very romantic for me and fulfills my sexual fantasy. In this way, it satisfies me like FORGET ME NOT (2010, Naphat Chaithiangthum, 30 min, A+++++++++++++++), which is one of my most favorite films I have seen this year. FORGET ME NOT is about the love between two boys in a rural Thai setting, and the story happens 70-80 years ago. It's like a gay version of Cherd Songsri's films.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf9YXI3fJcI
Both FORGET ME NOT and I LOVE SYNDROME use some old formulas of heterosexual stories/forms/styles and adapt them for gay stories. And I find both of them very fulfilling and satisfying.
Will this become a trend for Thai gay films and Thai gay stage plays? I don't know, but I think it will be interesting if it becomes a new trend. In the past, there have been many gay experimental films, gay films about AIDS, and gay films about unequal rights or prejudices. Recently, there have been some Thai gay TV series about real gay lifestyles, such as LOVE AUDITION, which is a very good trend, though I haven't had time to watch them yet. And now gay films/gay stage plays which use old formulas of heterosexual stories are made. It is very satisfying to see that some genres of films which have been dominated by heterosexual stories in the past are now being adapted for gay stories. And there are still many genres for Thai gay films to explore, including the folklore genre, the martial-arts genre, the rural action genre, the melodrama about love-between-different-classes genre, the conscript (ทหารเกณฑ์) genre, etc. I hope to see more Thai gay films made along these genres in the near future.

I also hope that the Stockholm Syndrome story will be adapted into a feature film. The role of the captive singer may be played by someone like Poppy. The role of the kidnapper may be played by someone like Peerawat Herabut.

2. The fact that the Asperger Syndrome story does not have a happy ending. However, I think its ending is still a little bit too forced. In the ending of this story, which is also the ending of the play, the heroine accepts the fact that she cannot cope with her Asperger boyfriend any more, and decides to dump him no matter how pitiful or innocent he is. Later, when she reads a book about a neglected cat, it reminds her of him, and she feels very sad and wants to cry.
I like it very much that the heroine decides to dump her boyfriend, because I might do the same as her. Both the heroine and I are not virtuous or strong persons. We are just flawed human beings who are selfish, unable to solve every problem in life in a graceful manner, and we just want to survive. However, the ending scene is not successful in making the audience cry, and I think it is partly because the play doesn't spend enough time on this couple. We don't truly understand how much love the heroine might have for her boyfriend or how wonderful her boyfriend can be when they are together. It is understandable that the play contains four stories, so we cannot spend enough time on the Asperger couples. But this fact makes me able to sympathize only with the heroine's frustration with her boyfriend, but I cannot sympathize with the heroine's love for her boyfriend or her regret for having lost her boyfriend. I think this problem can solved if the story is adapted into a 60-90 minute play/film.
3.The play indirectly teaches the audience "not to trust the rumor or appearance", especially in the Stockholm Syndrome story and the Bipolar story. I like it very much that in the Stockholm Syndrome story, the rich elder brother seems like a wicked, crooked businessman at first, and the kidnapper seems like a Robin Hood or a victim who tries to get revenge. But later it turns out that the rich businessman is not as crooked as what we has assumed, and the kidnapper is the crooked one.
The Bipolar story is very interesting if you analyze it politically. But I won't analyze its politics because I know very little about politics. But I like it very much that this story about a superheroine who tries to fight a gang of bad men under an evil mafia (or politician?) is very complicated. Everything is not what it looks like. The superheroine may be a "false personality" of a girl. This false personality may be created by a person who secretly controls the girl and who may gain some profits for himself if the girl destroys the mafia. In this story, the son may betray the father, the follower may betray the leader, and the girl may betray herself.
In a way, I think this Bipolar story is at least as complicated as SHATTERED IMAGE (1998, Raul Ruiz). If this story is adapted into a feature film, its story and its political implications may be more interesting than RED EAGLE (2010, Wisit Sasanatieng, A+/A) and HEADSHOT (2011, Pen-ek Ratanaruang, A+).
4. The structure of the play. The play tells 4 four stories, each one of which has roughly three acts. What is amazing is that the play doesn't tell one story from start to finish before it starts to tell another one. But the play tells act one from each four stories, then tells act two from each four stories, then tells acts three from each four stories or something like that. But I LOVE SYNDROME is very easy to follow, and in fact, it can be considered one of the easiest plays to follow among Ninart's plays. Ninart is great in writing highly complicated stories with obscure messages. I LOVE SYNDROME has a complicated structure, but at least its message is clear (the play wants us to understand people who suffer from each of the four mental syndromes), so that's why I think I LOVE SYNDROME is one of the easiest plays to understand among Ninart's works.
5.Though I like the story of the Stockholm Syndrome the most, I think the performers in I LOVE SYNDROME are most successful in the Asperger story, partly because they play "normal university students" in this story. There is much fun in watching them talking in a fake birthday party scene in the Asperger story. In this story, the young actors play some characters who are not so far from their real lives. That may be one of the reasons why their performances can enliven the scene very much in this story.

WHY I LIKE "FLUSH TANK" (2011, Tossaphon Riantong, A++++++++++)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5w8TmpKw4_g

ENTERTAINING MR SLOANE (1969, Douglas Hickox, UK, 94 min, A+)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YLNr2-dsyk
What I think is interesting in ENTERTAINING MR SLOANE includes:
1.All the main characters are "unlikeable". It is not easy for an ordinary viewer to identify himself/herself with any of the four characters. I identify myself a little bit with Ed (Harry Andrews), because this character is a lusty middle-aged gay, though I can't identify myself totally with this character, because this character is much richer than me.
Normally I identify myself with a lonely middle-aged female character, especially with the heroines of the films MOURIR D'AIMER (2009, Josée Dayan), SHIRLEY VALENTINE (1989, Lewis Gilbert), SWANN (1996, Anna Benson Gyles), THE LOVE LETTER (1999, Peter Chan), and AN AUTUMN TALE (1998, Eric Rohmer), but I can't identify myself with Kath (Beryl Reid) in ENTERTAINING MR SLOANE, though I would do the same thing that she does in the opening scene--inviting a handsome stranger to stay at her house. I think the main reason why I can't identify myself with this character is because the film doesn't look at this character with "sympathetic eyes", but look at this character in a little bit sarcastic or contemptuous eyes.
I like it very much that Kath, the heroine of this film, is a fat, middle-aged woman, but the heroine of this film is closer to the monstrous Diane Ladd in WILD AT HEART (1990, David Lynch) than to the heroine of MOURIR D'AIMER, whose yearning for a younger lover can easily break my heart. I mean ENTERTAINING MR SLOANE seems to make the viewers "fear" the sexual advance of Kath, instead of "cheering for" Kath.
I can't identify myself with the hero (Peter McEnery) of this film at all. The hero, or anti-hero, of this film reminds me a little bit of Joe Orton (Gary Oldman) in PRICK UP YOUR EARS (1987, Stephen Frears) and Stuart Jones (Aidan Gillen) in QUEER AS FOLK (1999-2000). These characters are confident, sexy guys who like to manipulate other people. ENTERTAINING MR SLOANE is based on a play written by Joe Orton, and I think Orton might have transferred some of his own characteristics to Mr. Sloane.
2.The film is loveless. There is lust in this film, but there seems to be no real love. Thus, the film is even bleaker than the films of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, who also dealt with the gay relationship and the relationship between an old woman and a young man in his films. I guess Fassbinder didn't believe too much in the power of love, but some of his characters might believe in it. On the contrary, the characters in ENTERTAINING MR. SLOANE give me the feelings that they are unable to love.
3.The black comedic tone of this film reminds me of the wonderful black comedies of Danny DeVito, especially DUPLEX (2003) and THROW MOMMA FROM THE TRAIN (1987), but ENTERTAINING MR SLOANE goes farther than DeVito's films because there's no character whom you can identify with or root for in ENTERTAINING MR SLOANE, while you can a little bit cheer for Billy Crystal in THROW MOMMA FROM THE TRAIN or Ben Stiller in DUPLEX.
4.The ending of ENTERTAINING MR SLOANE surprises me a little bit.
5.Its story reminds me of two groups of films that I like very much:
5.1 Films about a handsome stranger who seduces members of a family
5.1.1 TEOREMA (1968, Pier Paolo Pasolini), but I prefer TEOREMA to ENTERTAINING MR SLOANE, because I like the supernatural part of TEOREMA very much.
5.1.2 DRY CLEANING (1997, Anne Fontaine)
5.1.3 BROKEN DOWN FAMILY (2010, Claude d'Anna, A+/A). This film is like a PG version of other films in the same group. This film deals with a middle-class family who lets a male friend who is an ex-prisoner stays at their house. The ex-prisoner attracts the wife, the daughter, and a friend of the daughter, but not the husband, unfortunately.
5.2 Films about a woman who picks up a young guy from the street and invites him to stay at her house
5.2.1 MON HOMME (Bertrand Blier)
5.2.2 THE NOISE IN MY HEAD (2008, Vincent Pluss)
5.2.3 CAN'T SAY NO (2009, Iliana Lolitch)
5.2.4 JOY HOUSE (1964, René Clément)
I still haven't seen THAT COLD DAY IN THE PARK (1969, Robert Altman), which I think belongs to this group, too.
6.My most favorite scene is the one in which Mr. Sloane is lying half-naked in bed, talking about sports, and trying to seduces Ed by touching himself. You can watch this scene here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72dIjbxNbHU&feature=related
7.The use of beautiful songs to summarize the story. This kind of technique reminds me of the film THEY ALL LIE (2009, Matías Piñeiro, Argentina). The use of beautiful songs in a black-comedic context also reminds me of the songs of the band THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH. You can listen to the song at minute 4:30 in this clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcJ05HReUio&feature=related
In conclusion, ENTERTAINING MR SLOANE is a really entertaining black comedy. I like the presentation of sexuality in this film very much. Somehow I think of this film as a "distant" cousin of Fassbinder's films, though it lacks Fassbinder's sharp observation on society.

ONE SUNNY MORNING (2011, BK Lim, Singapore, A+)
What I like very much about ONE SUNNY MORNING includes:
1.How the film opens and ends. I think there is some kind of poetic touches between the opening and the ending of the film. I'm not sure what the ending of this film means. Does Juan just think about his love for Nick? Anyway, I hope he returns to Nick.
2.The flirting scene at the swimming pool. I think it is quite sexy and funny. I like the bird's-eye view shot which shows Nick on the bridge.
3.The mysteries about the personal life and the motivation of Juan. Maybe the film doesn't intend to make them mysteries. I'm just not sure about them after seeing it for only one time. But I think it is good that the film doesn't tell them straightforwardly or explain everything too clearly.
I'm not sure why Juan leaves Nick. Does he really not love Nick any more? Does he ever love Nick at all? Does he have any other reasons why he leaves Nick? A Thai friend of mine guesses that Juan may have a wife and a child, and the photo near the end of the film may be the photo of Juan's child.
4.The film doesn't look down on both Nick and Juan. The film doesn't portray Juan as a heartless villain/anti-hero and doesn't portray Nick as just a funny, lusty gay guy. The film seems to indicate that their love might be real, at least temporarily, and each of them has a heart.
The mentioning of Michelangelo Antonioni in the ending credit makes me understand from which film the mime scene is inspired. I think it is inspired by BLOW UP. :-)
In conclusion, I like ONE SUNNY MORNING a lot, and I think it does quite well in portraying the problems in the lives or in the relationships of some gays. What I wish after I saw this film is that I hope Nick will find a true love after Juan. I hope Nick will find someone who really loves him, someone who doesn't have a wife and a child, someone who doesn't care about the oppressive society we live in, someone who will be truly worthy of Nick's love. That's the story of the sequel of ONE SUNNY MORNING playing in my own imagination. :-) :-) :-)
The photo below does not come from the film. It is just a photo of the main actor of the film.

Some reservations on TO WONG FOO THANKS FOR EVERYTHING, JULIE NEWMAR (1995, Beeban Kidron, A+++++)
This is from a friend's Facebook:
I like this film very much, though I think this film is a perfect example of how Hollywood likes to cheat the audience about the feelings of the characters. This film doesn't show us at all how Jason London's character reacts to the fact that the girl he pursues is actually a man. After the truth is revealed, we can see Jason London's character dance in the party. It is as if his feelings don't matter at all. On the contrary, TOMBOY (2011, Céline Sciamma, A+) treats this kind of thing much better.

I suppose you mourn all children like you're mourning Caylee Anthony.
Shades of Mother Teresa and Princess Diana. There was a news story yesterday about all the sweet darling little helpless children dying in Somalia.
I know we are mourning them with the same fierceness
with which we mourn Caylee Anthony.
As we vilify Casey Anthony, (that it may never be forgot?) we are surely doing the same to those who tied Matthew Shepard to a fence and let him die, the tears frozen on his face?

TANWARIN SUKKHAPISIT, ONE OF THE LEADERS OF THAI QUEER CINEMA
Things I like in Tanwarin's films include:
1.How she presents different viewpoints of different characters, or distorted viewpoints of some characters. Tanwarin's films show us that our viewpoints are actually very limited, and often lead us to misunderstanding or wrong conclusions. Films in this category include:
1.1 THE RING (2001, 29 min)
If I remember it correctly, this film tells the same story three times; each time with a different viewpoint.
1.2 DEEP INSIDE (2001, 23 min)
If I remember it correctly, this film also tells the same story three times; each time with a different viewpoint.
1.3 FAKE WORLD (ลวงโลก/โลกลวง) (2007, 13 min)
If I remember it correctly, this film shows us the life of an actress, and then shows us this actress' life again but via the distorted viewpoint of the media.
1.4 WHERE'S MY DOLL? (2008, 5 min)
If I understand it correctly, this film tells us the story of a blind man who loves a woman. But because he is blind, he doesn't know that his lover is actually a transvestite.
1.5 INSECTS IN THE BACKYARD (2010, 93 min)
This film shows us the life of a father, a son, and a daughter, and how wrongly they may perceive one another.
2.The contrast between your appearance and your real self.
2.1 DEEP INSIDE
This film shows us a male teacher who looks like an ordinary male teacher, but actually he is not. This film shows us a woman who looks like a tough prostitute, but she is also a university student.
2.2 IN THE NAME OF SIN (2006, 36 min, co-directed with Nikorn Sripongwarakul)
This film shows us a male teacher who has trouble with keeping up the appearance of "a respectable male teacher".
2.3 UNDISCOVERED HEART (2007, 22 min)
This film shows us a gay, who may look slutty on the outside, but has a real heart on the inside.
2.4 INSECTS IN THE BACKYARD
This film shows us a drag queen who likes to dress glamorously, but he is also a father, and his life is not as glamorous as his dresses.
2.5 HUG NA SARAKHAM
This film shows us a handsome university student who lies to his fellow students that he comes from Bangkok, though in fact he comes from a rural province. He has a talent in singing and performing in a traditional folk style, but he tries to hide his talent from his friends.
In contrast, this film also shows us a doctor who is not ashamed to be a traditional folk performer. This doctor doesn't have the problem of "your appearance vs. your real self".
3. Queer desire
Tanwarin's films satisfy my romantic imaginations. Compared to some other queer Thai filmmakers, her films are not as experimental as Apichatpong Weerasethakul, not as provocative as Michael Shaowanasai, not as structurally interesting as Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke, and not as funny as Poj Arnon (with the exception of HUG NA SARAKHAM, which is funnier than Poj's films), but I find her films very romantic, though it often comes with a bitter taste. Tanwarin's films which satisfy my romantic imaginations include:
3.1 THE RING
3.2 DEEP INSIDE
3.3 IN THE NAME OF SIN
3.4 UNDISCOVERED HEART
4. Strong or memorable female characters. Some female characters in Tanwarin's films are far from being the object of male desire, but they are very interesting.
4.1 DEEP INSIDE
I like the female university student in this film very much. She is very tough and very scary.
4.2 TOP SECRET (2005, 18 min)
I think Tanwarin looks very good as a female spy in South Korea in this film, though the film is not as interesting as her character.
4.3 PHONE MOOD (2007)
I like it very much that PHONE MOOD presents many female characters who look like normal people, instead of looking like "adorable female stars".
4.4 INSECTS IN THE BACKYARD
I like the daughter in this film very much. She is a very tough character.
4.5 HUG NA SARAKHAM
I like the character of Sudarat Bootprom in this film very much. She plays a horny female character, which is a kind of character who is often relegated to a supporting role in most Thai films, but in this film she is the leading role.
5.Some interesting ideas
Some of Tanwarin's films have interesting ideas, though I think only some of them are successful in presenting their ideas, while others fail a little bit, because the latter group of films don't have the poetic touches which can keep the whole things flow smoothly. I think the successful one is I'M FINE (2008, 4 min), which presents some social/political ideas. I think its success is partly due to the fact that the film is not too ambitious.
I like some of Tanwarin's films very much, especially THE RING, DEEP INSIDE, UNDISCOVERED HEART, INSECTS IN THE BACKYARD, and HUG NA SARAKHAM. Though I don't like some of her films that much, I still like some ideas, some weird moments, or some memorable moments in them, such as:
5.1 INTO THE SEED (ในเปลือก) (2006, 30 min)
The film tries to tell its story in a non-chronological way. I like this idea or the attempt to make a film in this way very much, though the film ends up confusing me a lot.
5.2 LOOK AT ME! (2007, 5 min)
I don't know what this film means, but I still think it is interesting. The film shows us a view of a house from the outside on a dark, rainy night. I expect some bad things to happen, such as a murder, a burglary, or a crime. I saw someone move inside the house, but I don't know what he or she does in the end.
5.3 PHONE MOOD
I like the idea of this film very much, and I admire the attempt to make a film like this. It shows us many female characters while they are telephoning. But I think the film suffers from the same problem as INTO THE SEED. Both films don't flow smoothly and don't have a satisfying emotional trajectory.
5.4 PENGUIN (2008)
I like Tanwarin's attempt to remake PENGUIN (2007, Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit) in her own way. I don't remember any details in Tanwarin's PENGUIN, except that it is a little bit weird and lovely film.
