Garing Boom

Jam: so, on our trip up we stayed over at a gorgeous little B&B just outside of Springfontein. I won't lie, I was a little apprehensive about this stop given its location, and was pleasantly surprised. The B&B is set on a farm and consists of 5 separate rooms – each with its own tv (ours wasn't working due to a lightening strike – turned out to be a blessing), en-suite bathroom, and a little kitchenette. Did I forget to mention a little bar fridge stocked with beer for R5 – Jar thought this was heaven!

We arrived later than anticipated due to road works, and headed straight to the main house for supper. Three course meal which included some delicious Karoo lamb – apparently it gets its flavour from the herbs in the environment. Our hosts (Jan and Riette) were very friendly and made us feel right at home. After supper we sat and chatted at the bar, watched some cricket and headed of to bed.

Thursday was another early morning, and a delicious breakfast awaited us. Fruit, yoghurt, cereal, egg and so on and so on… needless to say, Jar and I made sure to fill up for the next leg of our journey!

All in all, our stop over was fantastic, and I wouldn't have minded spending some more time there – they offer hikes, bird watching and some horse riding. A truly awesome night at a very reasonable price. If you ever find yourself in that part of the country, due yourself a favour and drop in. Just be sure to book ahead as they are very popular – as can be seen in their numbers – they have hosted 13000 guests since opening ten years ago!

JAR: Since jam has summed up the place quite nicely, I thought I would add in some photos and other useless info. Springfontein is roughly 860km from Cape town, 560 km from Johannesburg and 500km from PE/Grahamstown. It is the area where Patrick Mynhardt and AJ venter grew up. It is also where they discovered a new species of bird, which can be viewed here
